Why behave this way? In “Soundly”, a woman Allison — who has an ex named ‘Adam’ — spends an evening out with her best friend Lilawho’s dying of a rare disease, and they both focus on what their friendship means, particularly compared to their relationships with men.

The disasters in the novel remind the characters that they should be a bit more serious about love and less shallow about it, but that you cannot actually sustain that for very long. So it can get confusing and confusion, rightly so, frustrates some readers. There is no normal path. I’ve never read Handler’s kid stuff but Adverbs did make me feel young again, if you don’t mind that dust-smudged cliche. The dabiel all reoccur during the novel but are adverrbs unmemorable you can’t keep track of who’s who. The challenge, should I choose to accept daniek duh, of course I dois to read five books between January 20th and March 20th.


Adverbs by Daniel Handler

There are a small number of writers that I have consciously stolen from, though influence seems too tame a word to describe my relationship with their work. I like this book more for its attempt at trying something a danie different than the actually follow through. The author’s use of adverbs to describe the type of loving that’s occurring also fails to translate.

It’s clever, original, and Handler certainly clearly, obviously, surely, blatantly,undoubtedly, and definitely–badump bump has a way with words.

I don’t generally write reviews, but this book disappointed me to the degree that I feel compelled to write one anyway.

I don’t know danuel that book was but it doesn’t matter. I read a lot of books. Lovingly, excitedly, and satisfyingly. At First Sight Was Handler being homophobic? Handler’s ability and keen insight into love’s varied forms is on display, though, and we remain compelled despite our awareness that young love won’t be blossoming. You just have to watch the way it goes about, which is a different way of looking at a story than most novels.

It reminded me of a maximum security prison that I had read about in which none of the inmates had any contact with each other ever, because it was all managed this way. He continued to write, and he and his wife returned to San Francisco, where they now live with their son.
